Maybe they need to be larger? (I agree, though, with direct sun coming in at ow angle, the only thing that will halp is a sun visor if it is at the right spot for your eyes to get some cover.)

They will leave a mark in the chrome when ever they are moved. It is difficult to get the set screw back in the same place every time.

Not really. The set screws go in up from the bottom, not down from the top. You have to practically stand on your head to even see any small mark left on the underside of the windshield flange. And...
